Definitive biography of Gandhi

Posted : 9 months, 4 weeks ago on 16 March 2008 04:00 (A review of Gandhi)

The definitive movie on the leader of modern India's movement to gain independence from British rule comes from ..... you guessed it, a Britisher.

Not one of the better Bond movies

Posted : 9 months, 4 weeks ago on 16 March 2008 03:58 (A review of Octopussy)

In the sequence where Bond flies in his helicopter, the manage to squeeze buildings from three different Indian cities into one strange concoction of a city. Well, Bond movies don't usually have too much commonsense anyway.

Dumb

Posted : 9 months, 4 weeks ago on 16 March 2008 03:57 (A review of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom)

Pathetically stupid portrayal of India. After looking at the script, the Indian govt wouldn't let Spielberg shoot in India. So he shot the movie in Sri Lanka. Amrish Puri must have sold his sould to devil when agreed to star in this dumb movie.

Is this the same movie I remember?

Posted : 9 months, 4 weeks ago on 16 March 2008 03:42 (A review of Ice Castles)

I saw this when I was 8 or 9 and came away rather impressed. Two decades on, I'm not that impressed. Still, mildly entertaining in parts, though I used the fast forward button liberally in others.

2nd gen Indian does stand-up, and how!

Posted : 10 months ago on 15 March 2008 02:08 (A review of Russell Peters - Outsourced [2006])

He's the first Indian stand up comic I've seen who breaks out of cliches and is actually funny. Takes on racial stereotypes and cultural idiosyncrasies among other things. Brilliant stuff.

Still great after over a decade

Posted : 10 months ago on 11 March 2008 10:58 (A review of Four Weddings and a Funeral (Deluxe Edition))

I've seen this movie about a dozen times now. That's one DVD I'll always have on my shelf.

Defined much of rock music for me

Posted : 10 months ago on 11 March 2008 08:42 (A review of Jagged Little Pill)

I heard this album when I was in my late teens and it is the kind of rock music that I will always love. The themes of this album influence the music I like - angst, disappointment, how life is full of irony, strong women etc. It got me hooked on female voices and female singer/songwriters ever since.

Indian marriage video

Posted : 10 months ago on 11 March 2008 08:06 (A review of Monsoon Wedding)

Mira Nair made an excellent choice of shooting it like a wedding video rather than a conventional movie which gives it a very intimate feel. She also assembled a cast composed of some of the finest actors in contemporary Indian stage and cinema. Add to all this an excellent script which has *very* few false moments and you have a winner.

Falling in love isn't this dull

Posted : 10 months ago on 10 March 2008 09:40 (A review of Fall)

The movie was artificial, unfunny and also cliched for the most part. A few bright spots fail to lift it beyond boring. The only part I really liked was the final monologue but by then it was too late.

What happened at the end?

Posted : 10 months ago on 9 March 2008 08:16 (A review of Marriage Is a Crazy Thing )

The movie traces the development of an unconventional relationship between a college professor and career woman. He doesn't believe in marriage and she wants a rich husband. What follows is definitely unconventional and in turn, bizarre, funny, touching, thoughtful among other things. The movie leaves without making it clear how it turns out. It's one those things, you know, where the kind of person you are determines how you think it ends. Excellent acting throughout.
