Down memory lane

Posted : 10 months, 2 weeks ago on 28 February 2008 04:08 (A review of Caught by Computer)

This used to be one of my favourite books when I was much, much younger. I must have read it when I was 9 or so.

Pathbreaking book on Evolution/Genetics

Posted : 10 months, 2 weeks ago on 27 February 2008 09:13 (A review of The Selfish Gene: 30th Anniversary Edition--with a new Introduction by the Author)

This book sparked my interest in evolution and genetics. He has his atheist agenda which bugs me a little. However, this doesn't detract from his excellent writing and lucid presentation of a complicated topic.

Fantasy at its finest

Posted : 1 year, 10 months ago on 26 February 2007 07:17 (A review of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell: A Novel)

The book takes a little getting into, as it covers very long time periods in the first of three parts. The action speeds up in the second part and is absolutely breakneck in the third. the plot is brilliant, and all the time that you spend on the book will be well worth it. It is richly scattered with motifs and dark imagery. This isn't your run of the mill fantasy novel that borrows from medieval ideas of knights and swordplay. It is set very much in the modern era. Magic is interwoven into the fabric of everyday life and feels natural. All in all, fantasy at it's finest.
